Mr. Garrett is available for consulting on curriculum, lesson planning, assessment of student writing with recommendations to parents on an action plan for helping the student improve his or her writing skills, instructional strategies to assist parents in providing viable writing and language arts instruction for the homeschool children, grades 3-12.
Trainer
Not only is Garrett a teacher of students but also he is a teacher of parents and other teachers. He has extensive experience in planning and conducting in-service workshops for teachers in the public-school arena. As TAAS Coordinator for Westfield High School for five years, part of his job was training teachers in strategies to improve their students' writing skills and, therefore, help the students pass the writing portion of the TAAS Test (now called TAKS). Prior to that, his role as K-12 Language Arts Coordinator for the Pascagoula Municipal Schools in Pascagoula, MS, involved teacher inservice, orientation for new teachers to the district, and various other workshops.
Mr. Garrett currently conducts workshops for homeschool parents. His seminars deal primarily with teaching strategies for writing instruction in the home, but, upon request, include other areas as well, such as using computers in the instructional process, grammar instruction and how to make grammar skills transfer into the writing process, or other topics that may concern homeschool parents.

Mr. Garrett and his wife also offer standardized achievement testing for homeschool students, elementary and secondary levels.
We administer the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) for Grades 3-8 and the Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED) for Grades 9-12.
Testing is usually done in May shortly after the end of the school year.
John is also available to administrator other tests such as Advanced Placement (AP) exams as the need arises.
